I'm in the best part of my life and loving it. Also, just so you know, it's not a nickname.

I haz teh internetz backz!

Today on the UNCW TV station that never stops playing at work, I got really scared when I thought Donnie Darko was on, since Tears for Fears started streaming out of the widescreen TV’s speakers.

However, UNCW TV surprised me again, now The Dodos are belting out intense beats and I really want to know who picks the music for this station. You’d think poorly designed slides advertising underrepresented clubs and activities (case in point, the Jewish Student Organization slide is up now) would use elevator music. I’m thinking somebody at Teal TV has some excellent taste in music.

Cheese Sandwich Film Festival!

If you don’t know Josselyn or you haven’t heard of the Cheese Sandwich Film Festiva l(Wednesday, April 1st, Jengo’s Playhouse in downtown Wilmington) go to http://www.cheesesandwichfilmfestival.com NOW!

Sunday, Adam, Martin and I grabbed a loaf of bread, a package of Kraft American cheese and Martin’s mini-DV camera and ran around Wilmington delivering cheese sandwiches. Martin and Adam came up with the idea after we bumped into Dan Brawley downtown after breakfast. A wonderful Sunday agreed, we agreed we needed to be productive. The Cheese Sandwich Film Festival deadline was that night.

We grilled Sandwiches and made an intro at The Carolina (who doesn’t love Blue Velvet references), then called our friends downtown and interviewed Trevor while he made music, followed by Sam, David, and Gina as they lounged around Gina’s adorable house. We handed an anonymous girl a sandwich and asked her about her cheese experiences, then Dan explained how to make a cheese sandwich when you’re jonesing for a bite.

We left downtown and bombarded our friends living around campus, then ended with Lindsey Johnson comparing my freshly grilled sandwich to breakfast foods. Thanks, Lindsey.

We edited everything in-camera and finished filming within a few hours. We captured the best clips and I think the simplicity reflects the spirit of the Cheese Sandwich Film Festival. I’m excited Josselyn created this festival and I can’t wait to attend tomorrow!

Hazards of Love

Several people mentioned I might not like the new Decemberists album, “Hazards of Love.” I’m not sure I understand them. As soon as I uploaded it, I couldn’t turn it off.

I love concept albums. I always have, I think that’s why my high school musical taste revolved heavily around Tim Kasher. The Decemberists held it’s rank in my high school music library, and album after album they continue to impress me.

Colin Meloy’s vocals ring familiar and true as they change their style while keeping up their unique stories we loved with “The Tain” as well as the humor and honesty leaking from  ”Apology Song.”

With lyrics, such as “The Rake’s Song’s” intro:

"I had entered into a marriage
In the summer of my twenty-first year
And the bells rang for our wedding
Only now do I remember it clear
Alright, alright, alright

No more a rake and no more a bachelor
I was wedded and it whetted my thirst
Until her womb start spilling out babies
Only then did I reckon my curse ”

Fantastic. Bravo Decemberists, you’ve done it again.

Gym, shower, homework, class. Looks like I’m getting this semester back on track. Finally. I don’t know why I’ve been so unmotivated all semester, but I’m turning that around.

Hell Week 2: Revenge of Spring Break - Day 3

Hell Week 2: Revenge of Spring Break - Day 3

So I always knew that the UNC-W TV channel played weird music. I thought I recognized some electronica band that always plays on repeat, but I never really payed attention to it.
For those that don’t know, I’m currently sitting at my desk job—procrastinating studying and short stories—when suddenly I heard the sweet, soulful vocals of Colin Meloy. Of course I perked up, but all I saw was the blasted UNC-W channel 77, and then it hit me. They’re actually playing good music on this channel? I mean, I’m sure it was a Crane Wife song, in fact I know it is. It was just out of character and strange at 8:30 in the morning, but I enjoyed it.

I love when The Decemberists pop into my life.
